DH batting 9th

You’ve probably already heard about the controversy in New York, with Jorge Posada taking himself out of the game after he was entered into the lineup in the nine-hole as the DH.

Well since rain has washed away baseball here in Cleveland I figured I’d toy around with some stats relating to the controversy…

  • There have been 570 instances of a DH batting 9th.
  • The Orioles are the leader with 87 led by Jerry Hairston with 19 games and former Indian Mike Young with 18.
  • Former Yankee (and very briefly an Indian in spring training) Nick Johnson is the career leader with 27 games batting 9th as the DH. 28 of those games came in 2002.
  • The Tribe has had 15 games with the DH batting 9th, led by Jason Dubois with four in 2005. Here’s the full list:

Peralta Inside the Park Home Run

Thanks to an unlocked bullpen gate, Jhonny Peralta rounded the bases with his first career inside the park home run on Sunday afternoon. He became just the 5th Indian to hit an inside the park homer in Jacobs Field – all five of which have come since 2000.

This is an odd stretch of five inside the park home runs in an 11-year span for the Tribe. Prior to Enrique Wilson‘s in 2000, the Indians hadn’t hit one in their home ballpark since Mel Hall rounded the bases against the A’s in 1988.
